Start with the evidence, because it is weaker than it looks
Ratings in this category are not comparable to anything else on this site. Our ten mowers carry between 54 and 400 ratings each. A reel mower on the same site carries 15,153.
Two things make the numbers weaker still. Amazon pools ratings across bundles of the same product, and it pools them across accessory sets. Both effects are easy to see.
- Pooled across bundles: the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 shows 191 ratings on two different listings. The LUBA mini 2 shows 263 on two. ECOVACS shows 188 on three separate listings plus a garage accessory.
- Pooled with accessories: on the ANTHBOT M5 listing, a three star review from Alex on 21 September 2026 reads "pretty expensive for just a big piece of plastic with a hinge". He is reviewing a plastic garage, and it counts against the mower.
- Pooled with other models: on the Sunseeker X3 Plus listing, a four star review from John on 23 May 2026 is labelled "Set name: X5&X7 Garage" and discusses a garage for the Orion X7, which is a different mower entirely.
Read the set label on each review before you let it count. A 60 review robot mower may really have 40 reviews of the mower and 20 of a shed.
Navigation decides almost everything
Four systems are in play, and the choice matters more than price, coverage or cutting width.
RTK uses satellite positioning with corrections from a fixed antenna, and needs that antenna to see plenty of open sky. Accurate on open ground and the single biggest source of complaints in our research. NWBW spent weeks with ECOVACS support on a Goat A2500 before concluding the root cause was the RTK receiver not getting stable and solid signals. Mike Burnham reports the Sunseeker X3 Plus satellite regularly failing to calibrate. Jim returned a different robot mower because he could not get satellites to connect at all.
LiDAR spins a laser scanner to build a 3D picture of the yard, with no satellite involved. Four of our ten use it as the primary system, and none of them attracts the signal complaints. Boiler98 puts the appeal of his Mammotion LUBA 3 in four words, that no RTK antenna is needed.
Vision uses cameras, usually alongside LiDAR or RTK rather than alone.
A buried perimeter wire is the old approach and none of our ten needs one, which is why the category is worth a fresh look.
Practical rule: if your lawn has mature trees, a close neighboring roofline or anything else overhead, buy LiDAR. On a wide open lawn, RTK will save you money.
Coverage area is the number to shop on
Rated coverage is the one spec every manufacturer publishes and the one that decides whether a mower suits your lawn.
- Up to 1/8 acre, about 5,400 sq ft: Segway Navimow i105N at $669.00, ANTHBOT M5 at $799.00
- Up to 1/4 acre, about 10,900 sq ft: MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000 at $999.00, WORX WR310 at $1,026.16, Roborock RockNeo Q110H at $1,832.05
- 0.3 to 0.4 acre: Sunseeker X3 Plus at $753.29, Mammotion LUBA mini 2 at $1,799.00
- 5/8 acre and up: ECOVACS Goat A2500 at $1,937.40, DREAME A3 AWD Pro at $2,599.99, Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 at $2,799.00
Note how badly price tracks coverage. The Sunseeker covers 0.3 acres for $753.29 and the Roborock covers a quarter acre for $1,832.05. Coverage per dollar swings by a factor of three across this category, so work it out before you shop.
Slope ratings are a dry weather maximum
Published slope figures run from 30 percent on the WORX WR310 up to 80 percent on both Mammotion machines. Roughly, 30 percent is 17 degrees and 80 percent is 38 degrees.
All wheel drive is what buys the high numbers. Both Mammotion machines and the DREAME drive all four wheels. The rest drive two.
Owner reports suggest knocking the rated figure down. One Mammotion LUBA mini 2 owner, posting as Nameless, says the tires can spin getting up a small hill despite the 80 percent rating. Grass that is wet, or a slope that is also soft, costs you grip the spec sheet does not account for.
What nobody tells you: these are maintainers, not catch up mowers
Cutting widths here run 7.1 to 15.75 inches. A push mower cuts 20 or 21.
More important than the width is the blade. A push mower uses a curved blade in a sealed deck, and the suction stands grass up before cutting it. Robot mowers use small spinning razors with no deck suction at all. CLib, reviewing a DREAME A3 AWD Pro on 6 May 2026, states the consequence plainly, that it rolls over tall weeds and dandelions because the tiny cutting blades underneath have no lift.
So a robot mower keeps a lawn that is already cut. Letting one loose on three weeks of growth will disappoint you, and the mower will not be at fault.
Grass type matters, and no roundup mentions it
Two separate owners of the MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000 report the same failure on the same grass. Candoitoo, on 3 July 2026, found it kept getting stuck on St. Augustine runners during mapping, describing them as very strong, and returned the mower rather than deal with it during every cut. Dick C., on 5 August 2026, titled a four star review around the same struggle.
St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia all spread by thick surface runners. Robot mowers ride low with small blades, and a tough runner is enough to stop one. Cutting height matters here too. Warm season grasses are usually kept at 2.5 to 4 inches, and the Mammotion LUBA 3 tops out at 2.7 inches, so it cannot maintain them properly however good the navigation is.
Taller cutting options among our ten: MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000 at 3.9 inches, DREAME A3 AWD Pro at 4 inches, Mammotion LUBA mini 2 at 4 inches, ECOVACS Goat A2500 at 3.6 inches.
No subscription, and almost no published battery specs
Good news first. None of the ten listings we checked states a required subscription. The only recurring cost signal we found is on the Segway Navimow i105N, where a 4G module for anti theft tracking is offered as an optional add on, and nothing about mowing or the app depends on it.
The bad news is how little else gets published. Nine of our ten listings give no battery capacity. Nine give no runtime. Nine give no charge time.
- Only published runtime: Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000, 175 minutes from a 12Ah battery
- Only published charge time: ECOVACS Goat A2500, 45 minutes, with 5,382 sq ft per charge from a 5Ah pack on a 32V platform
- Only owner measured runtime: ANTHBOT M5, about an hour, reported by an owner posting as v on 19 September 2026
Spec blocks are unreliable too. The ECOVACS Goat A2500 listing gives its cutting width as 0.39 inches, which is impossible. The DREAME A3 AWD Pro, a four wheel drive machine with a 15.8 inch dual disc deck, is listed at 26.4 lbs, while the comparable Mammotion weighs 53.5 lbs. We flag both rather than print numbers we cannot stand behind.
Budget for blades, and buy generic
Robot mower blades are small flat razors that get swapped often, and brand pricing is wild. J.B., reviewing a Sunseeker X3 Plus on 30 June 2026, says $60.00 for 10 Sunseeker blades is unacceptable and that 30 generic blades cost $15.00 and work just as well. That is $6.00 a blade against $0.50.
Blades are also a failure cost. One ECOVACS Goat A2500 owner reports that a single run over an obstacle, caused by a malfunction, ruins a $15.00 set and leaves you replacing all six.
Check what happens when it goes wrong
Support quality varies more than the hardware does, and it shows up in the ratings.
- ANTHBOT troubleshot a faulty unit then exchanged it directly, which the owner called outstanding.
- ECOVACS worked a problem for weeks and then shipped a brand new mower under a 2 year warranty. Two separate owners praise the service while criticizing the mower.
- WORX runs tech support on weekday hours only. Ken reports that costing him a week before his mower would run at all.
Weekends are when lawns get mowed, so weekday only support is a real limitation rather than a detail.
